Director: Caroline Wood Newhall is the Assistant Professor of Civil War, Reconstruction, and 19th century United States History. She incorporates digital humanities tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in her own work, including her research on African American Civil War soldiers who became prisoners of war (POWs) in the Confederacy. She teaches the History Design Lab Practicum (HIST 264) to introduce students to digital methods and tools in historical research and analysis.
Former Director: Renee Romano is the Robert S. Danforth Professor of History, and Professor of Comparative American Studies and Africana Studies. She continued Professor Nunley’s work as the second director of the History Design Lab and oversaw numerous student projects including COVID at Kendal.
Founder: Tamika Nunley (Duke University) created the History Design Lab to provide opportunities for students to work collaboratively on work about the past. These projects involve innovative methodologies, archival research, workshops, and a blog with content created by students.
